Synopsis – Better Off Dead
- Carole: Lane Meyer, played by John Cusack is a teen with a peculiar family and a bizarre fixation with his girlfriend, Beth, played by Amanda Wyss. When Beth dumps Lane, he decides to unalive himself, making several bumbling attempts at taking his own life. Outside of his morbid endeavors, Lane spends time with his oddball buddy, Charles, played by Curtis Armstrong, and befriends Monique, played by Diane Franklin, a visiting French exchange student. Eventually, Lane resolves to race Beth’s obnoxious new beau on the ski slopes, with unexpected results.

The 90s brought us films like Grosse Pointe Blank and High Fidelity, which earned Cusack a Golden Globe nomination. Across four decades and more than 80 films, Cusack has built a career on playing intelligent outsiders. He remains outspoken about Hollywood, the US government, and war. - Lane’s dad is played by David Ogden Stiers, one of those actors you instantly recognize – “but from where?” A classically trained actor, Stiers started on Broadway and quickly became a familiar face in film and television.
He’s best known for playing Major Charles Winchester on M*A*S*H, a role that ran from 1977 through the series finale and earned him multiple Emmy nominations. In the 80s and 90s, he became a staple of TV movies and voice work, including iconic Disney roles like Cogsworth in Beauty and the Beast. He also did voiceover work for Pocahontas, Lilo & Stitch, and Spirited Away.
Beyond acting, Stiers was also an accomplished conductor and spent his later years leading the Newport Symphony Orchestra. - Diane Franklin, the French exchange student Monique is an American actress who started out in TV commercials: Coke, Jell-O, Trident gum, before landing her breakout role in The Last American Virgin. She followed that up with Amityville II: The Possession, proving early on she had great range. But she’s best remembered as Monique in Better Off Dead, delivering one of the most iconic fake accents in 80s cinema history.
She later popped up as Princess Joanna in Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure, stayed active in TV and film, and eventually embraced her legacy by writing memoirs about being an 80s movie icon. - Lane’s mom is played by Kim Darby, who also had an impressive film legacy long before Better Off Dead. Her breakout role was as Mattie Ross in True Grit, a performance that earned her a BAFTA nomination. She followed that up with a Golden Globe–nominated turn in Generation, and went on to appear in more than 80 film and television projects, including an Emmy-nominated role in Rich Man, Poor Man. Later in her career, she also became a respected acting teacher at UCLA.

- The town is Greendale, which is fictional, although there is a Greendale in California. Not the same.
Better Off Dead was one of the few films critics Siskel & Ebert featured on their weekly television show At the Movies while bypassing entirely in their respective Chicago newspapers. They gave the film “two thumbs down”.
Bill Cosford of The Miami Herald wrote, “Better Off Dead has the body of a tired teen comedy but the soul of an inspired student film; it’s the first movie in a long time to interrupt itself periodically with flights of animated fancy.
According to Holland, Cusack did not like the film and walked out of a screening during the filming of Holland’s One Crazy Summer (in which he also starred), later confronting Holland, saying Better Off Dead “was the worst thing I have ever seen. I will never trust you as a director ever again, so don’t speak to me.” Holland claimed that Cusack felt he had been made to look foolish and that his comments “made me not care about movies anymore. Cusak has refuted this version of what happened.
