Synopsis
Valley Girl is a 1983 romantic comedy that captures the vibrant culture clash between two distinct Los Angeles teenage worlds. The story follows Julie Richman, a popular, trendsetting Valley girl from the San Fernando Valley, who grows tired of her arrogant boyfriend and her shallow, conformist social circle. When she meets Randy, a raw, edgy Hollywood punk rocker with a sweet heart, the two share an instant, undeniable connection. As their whirlwind romance blossoms against a backdrop of iconic new wave music, Julie faces intense peer pressure from her judgmental friends to dump him, forcing her to choose between the safety of her social status and the thrill of breaking the mold.
Actors & Crew
- Nicolas Cage plays Randy. Born into the Coppola family, he began his career in films like Fast Times at Ridgemont High and this movie, as well as several films by his uncle Francis Ford Coppola. He received critical acclaim for Moonstruck and Raising Arizona before winning the Academy Award for Best Actor for Leaving Las Vegas, and was later Oscar-nominated for playing twins in Adaptation. He was inducted into the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1998.
- Deborah Foreman plays Julie Richman. Her breakout performance made her one of the defining faces of ’80s teen cinema. Beyond Valley Girl, she earned “scream queen” status with memorable roles in April Fool’s Day, Waxwork, and Destroyer. After retiring from acting in 1991, she transitioned to a career as a professional photographer, and made a cameo in the 2020 remake of Valley Girl.
- E.G. Daily plays Lauryn. Beyond live action, Daily became a hugely prolific voice actress, known for voicing Buttercup on The Powerpuff Girls, Tommy Pickles on Rugrats and its spin-off All Grown Up, Rudy Tabootie on ChalkZone, and Julius on Julius Jr. She also voiced the title character in the live-action film Babe: Pig in the City and Bamm-Bamm Rubble in The Flintstones.
- Cameron Dye plays Fred, Randy’s loyal punk friend. Throughout the 1980s he appeared in a string of cult favorites including The Last Starfighter, Body Rock, and Men at Work. He is also a founding member of the acclaimed theater company The Actors’ Gang.
