Synopsis
Veronica is part of the most popular clique at her high school, but she disapproves of the other girls’ cruel behavior. When Veronica and her new boyfriend, J.D., confront clique leader Heather Chandler and accidentally poison her, they make it appear a suicide. Soon Veronica realizes that J.D. is intentionally killing students he does not like. She races to stop J.D. while also clashing with the clique’s new leader, Heather Duke.

- Winona Ryder plays Veronica. Born Winona Laura Horowitz on October 29, 1971, in Winona County, Minnesota, she made her film debut in Lucas (1986) and rose to prominence with Beetlejuice (1988), followed by Heathers, Edward Scissorhands, Mermaids, and Dracula. She received back-to-back Academy Award nominations for The Age of Innocence (1993) and Little Women (1994, win: Golden Globe). She experienced a career resurgence beginning in 2016 as Joyce Byers in Stranger Things, and returned to the big screen in 2024 with Beetlejuice Beetlejuice.
- Christian Slater plays J.D. Born August 18, 1969, in New York City, he made his film debut in The Legend of Billie Jean (1985) and gained wider recognition with his breakout role as the sociopathic J.D. in Heathers. Through the 1990s he starred in Young Guns II, Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, True Romance, and Interview with the Vampire. He received critical acclaim for Mr. Robot (2015–2019), earning a Golden Globe, and more recently won a Children’s and Family Emmy for The Spiderwick Chronicles (2024).
- Shannen Doherty plays Heather Duke. Born April 12, 1971, in Memphis, Tennessee, she began her career as a child actress on Little House on the Prairie and Our House before landing the role of Heather Duke in Heathers (1988). She became a household name as Brenda Walsh on Beverly Hills, 90210, and later starred as Prue Halliwell on Charmed from 1998 to 2001. She passed away on July 13, 2024, from cancer, at age 53. Her best friend later shared that Doherty did not want to be remembered as the actress who had cancer, but rather for her animal activism, including her efforts to establish a sanctuary for wild horses.
- Kimberly Anne Walker plays Heather Chandler. Born June 19, 1968, in Manhattan, New York, she is best known for the role, and had additional film roles in Say Anything (1989) and The Outsiders (1990). She passed away on March 6, 2001, at age 32.
- Lisanne Falk plays Heather McNamara. Born December 3, 1964, she began her career as a model before transitioning to acting, and retired from the screen in 2002. She returned in 2024 with a role in Seed of Doubt and a television appearance in FBI: International.

- Principal photography took place over 33 days beginning in July 1988. Although set in Ohio, filming was done entirely in Los Angeles — “Westerburg High School” is an amalgamation of Corvallis High School (now Bridges Academy) in Studio City, Verdugo Hills High School in Tujunga, and John Adams Middle School in Santa Monica. The funeral scenes were filmed at Church of the Angels in Pasadena.

Roger Ebert gave it 2.5/4, writing: “For a long time, we’re not even sure of the point of view: Is this a black comedy about murder or just a cynical morality play? The traveler in the foreign country is not sure, but he knows the film inspires thought.” Janet Maslin (New York Times) called it “as snappy and assured as it is mean-spirited.”
